Google-owned streaming service confirms issues affecting its services over Tuesday night

YouTube experienced widespread broadcasting issues, affecting YouTube, YouTube TV, and YouTube Music, with the Google-owned streaming service down for almost two hours.

YouTube said it was looking into reports of issues with its services, as users contacted them complaining about the website being down from about 1.30am GMT.

Some users trying to access the YouTube homepage received an error message appearing saying: “Sorry, something went wrong. A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation.”

Other attempts led to the homepage opening but no video content being displayed.

YouTube responded to questions about the system breakdown by directing the Guardian to a tweet posted on the YouTube homepage. “Thanks for your reports about YouTube, YouTube TV, and YouTube Music access issues.

We’re working on resolving this and will let you know once fixed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will keep you updated.”

YouTube confirmed service was restored just over an hour later but offered no details.

YouTube was down but now it’s back

YouTube is experiencing a major outage. Users across the world started to notice that the video service’s sites and mobile apps were down around 9:20 PM ET, and everything remains inaccessible more than an hour later. YouTube TV and YouTube Music are also affected by the service disruption.

YouTube has acknowledged the outage in a tweet. “We’re working on resolving this and will let you know once fixed,” the Team YouTube account says. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will keep you updated.”

As of 10.35PM ET, the account is still replying to reports of the outage saying that the team is working on the problem.

As with all Google-operated services, serious downtime for YouTube is pretty rare. YouTube TV did suffer service interruption at an inopportune time during this summer’s World Cup, however, and channel pages went down for a while in April.

Perhaps most infamously, Pakistan’s government accidentally caused an hours-long global YouTube blackout a decade ago by attempting to censor a trailer for an anti-Islamic film.

Update, 10:40 PM ET:

Multiple Verge staffers are reporting that service has been restored, though YouTube itself is yet to confirm a fix.

Update, 11:01 PM ET:

YouTube says it has restored service, bringing the saga to an end.

Google’s YouTube suffers a major outage

  • Google streaming service YouTube was inaccessible on Wednesday morning as users were greeted with a blank page that showed no videos or displayed a network error on the mobile app.
  • The service was back up as of 11 a.m. HK/SIN time, although YouTube did not explain what caused the outage.

Google’s streaming service YouTube experienced a major outage on Wednesday morning as users complained that they were unable to access the website.

The service was back up as of 11 a.m. HK/SIN time (11 p.m. ET Tuesday), although YouTube did not explain what caused the outage.

Earlier, when users tried to access YouTube.com, they were greeted with a blank page that showed no videos. On the app, an error message read, “There was a problem with the network [503].”

A map on DownDetector, which tracks status information and outages for various types of services in real time, showed that users in the United States, Brazil, Japan, parts of Australia, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe were affected.

YouTube acknowledged the outage on Twitter and said it was working to fix the problem.

More than an hour later, the company tweeted that they were back in business.

A Google spokesperson pointed CNBC to the tweets and added the company had nothing else to share at the moment.

It is unusual for Google services to experience downtime but YouTube has experienced some problems in the past. During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, YouTube TV — a paid live streaming service — went down briefly during the match between Croatia and England.

Why was YouTube down today?

So what really went down that caused the world’s most popular video streaming website to crash?

YouTube crashed today. The online video platform by Google faced a major outage as users had multiple issues with login as well as uploading and watching video content. YouTube users who logged onto the website were shown error messages as they tried to log in or watch content on the platform.

The YouTube page displayed messages like ‘Error 500’ and ‘Error 503’ when users tried to watch any video content. YouTube, one of the most popular websites on the Internet, faced a rather unusual outage at around 6:50 am IST and was down for at least an hour.

The YouTube team, however, was quick to put out a tweet acknowledging the outage and promised that they were working on the problem. Even YouTube TV and YouTube Music faced similar outages during this period.

It took more than an hour for the YouTube team to bring back the website. YouTube has still not explained the main reason for such an outage.

Users who tried to access the website during this period were greeted with a blank page that showed no videos. On the app, however, an error message read which said, ‘There was a problem with the network [503].’

After more than an hour of putting up the tweet acknowledging the problem, the company tweeted that they were back in business. As with other Google services, a downtime of this magnitude for YouTube is rare.

Earlier this year, during a paid live-streaming of the England vs Croatia World Semi-final, YouTube TV suffered an outage but was quick to bring it back up.

Previously, one of the most infamous instance of such an outage was perhaps the hour-long global blackout that YouTube faced a decade ago when the Pakistan Government attempted to censor a trailer for an anti-Islamic film.

YouTube services are back.
