Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for an adult film star engaged in a legal battle with US President Donald Trump,
was arrested in Los Angeles on a felony domestic violence charge.

The 47-year-old lawyer posted bond and was released late Wednesday.
He will make his first court appearance December 5, according to The Los Angeles Times.
In a statement, Avenatti praised the police department for its “professionalism” while calling the allegations “completely bogus”.
“I have never been physically abusive in my life nor was I last night,” he said.
“Any accusations to the contrary are fabricated and meant to do harm to my reputation.
“I look forward to being fully exonerated.”

According to the celebrity website TMZ, Avenatti was allegedly involved in a dispute with an unidentified woman on Tuesday and was arrested on Wednesday following a second confrontation.
The website initially identified the woman as Avenatti’s estranged wife, Lisa Storie Avenatti, but she issued a statement to NBC saying he had never been violent with her.
Avenatti has been a thorn in the side of the US president as the lawyer for Stormy Daniels, who is suing Trump to invalidate a non-disclosure
agreement made days before the 2016 presidential election over an alleged sexual encounter she had with him.
Rumors have swirled for months over the prospect of Avenatti launching a presidential bid in 2020 when Trump will seek re-election.
The lawyer was slated to attend Democratic Party events in the eastern US state of Vermont, but the upcoming appearances were canceled following his arrest.
In recent months the lawyer has faced mounting legal and financial problems linked to his firm in Newport Beach, California.
In addition to Daniels, his clients have included Julie Swetnick, who said she witnessed sexually abusive behavior by Brett Kavanaugh,
the US Supreme Court justice whose volatile confirmation process was marked by multiple accusations of sexual assault when he was in high school and college.
If found guilty of the charge of domestic violence, Avenatti faces up to four years in prison.
Daniels in July was arrested for inappropriately touching patrons at a strip club in Ohio, an incident Avenatti had slammed as a “politically motivated” set-up aimed at discrediting her.
The charges against Daniels were quickly dropped.
California bar clears lawyer Michael Avenatti of fraud
allegations tied to his Tully’s business dealings
Word of the bar investigation clearing Michael Avenatti came Tuesday afternoon, shortly before police in Los Angeles reportedly responded to an incident of alleged domestic violence.
Police took Avenatti into custody Wednesday.
The agency that regulates lawyer conduct in California has cleared celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti of claims of fraudulent and unethical business dealings while he ran the Seattle-based Tully’s coffee chain,
according to letters sent to him and the Bellevue lawyer who formally filed the complaint.
“The State Bar has completed the investigation of the allegations of professional misconduct reported by David Nold,” according to the letter sent to Avenatti, who provided The Seattle Times with a copy.
“We have determined that this matter does not warrant further action. Therefore, the matter is closed.”
Nold, a Bellevue lawyer who represents landlords and other creditors of the failed coffee chain, filed the complaint in April.
He contended that while Avenatti ran Tully’s parent company, Global Baristas, Avenatti stole millions in state and federal tax withholdings from employee paychecks and fraudulently transferred $100,000
from the coffee, business to hire lawyers for his law firm’s unrelated bankruptcy case.
Avenatti has denied the allegations to the bar and blasted Nold as dishonest.
On Tuesday, Avenatti wrote in an email to The Times that the outcome of the bar’s investigation demonstrates that.
Michael Avenatti arrested in LA on the domestic
The alleged victim in the case had visible injuries, according to Officer Tony I’m, a police spokesman.
But Avenatti slammed the allegation as “completely bogus” and “fabricated and meant to do harm to my reputation” in a statement released by his law firm.
Avenatti, who has said he’s mulling a 2020 presidential run, posted $50,000 bail and was released about four hours after he was arrested Wednesday on the same block where he lives in a skyscraper apartment.
Police declined to provide any details about the alleged victim, including that person’s relationship to Avenatti.
As he left the police station Wednesday, Avenatti said he had never hit a woman and said he’s been an advocate for women’s rights his entire career.
“I wish to thank the hard working men and woman of the LAPD for their professionalism and their work today. They had no option in light of the allegations,” Avenatti said.
“I am looking forward to a full investigation, at which point I am confident that I will be fully exonerated.”
Avenatti became famous as Daniels’ lawyer and pursued the president and those close to him relentlessly for months, taunting Trump in interviews and baiting him and his lawyers in tweets.
