Auburn:

The problems that existed for the Tigers in Game 1 vs. Washington still exist heading into Week 12 — offensive line struggles make it difficult for the running backs to get going and quarterback Jarrett Stidham to stay clean in the pocket.

They’ve averaged just 3.83 yards per carrying in conference games, have given up 55 tackles for loss and coach Gus Malzahn hasn’t been able to find a way to coach around his team’s deficiencies.

There aren’t many deficiencies with the defense, though. Auburn is tied with Alabama with 87 tackles for loss, ranking eighth nationally.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is creative with his front seven, finds ways to get different players in the backfield and is as disruptive as any group in the nation.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa looked healthier against The Citadel than he has at any time over the last five weeks, and it has come at a perfect time.

He threw three touchdowns and averaged 15.5 yards per attempt against the Bulldogs, and kept his status as the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy.

There’s a slight worry with leading-rusher Damien Harris, who suffered a minor concussion last week. But coach Nick Saban has amassed plenty of depth at running back in case Harris isn’t 100 percent.

The front seven has been dominant all year, and hasn’t slowed down as the grind of the season has worn on.

Game prediction, picks

Sorry, Auburn, but if you haven’t solved your problems by now, you aren’t against Alabama. Led by Quinnen Williams, the defense will shut down Auburn’s offense, make it difficult for Stidham to set his feet and take advantage of Malzahn’s lack of creativity with the offense.

With that said, the Crimson Tide are giving up too many points out in Las Vegas. Auburn will hit a few big plays late to sneak back in the back door and cover the spread

Auburn WR Ryan Davis out after targeting penalty to

Alabama’s Jared Mayden

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Auburn wide receiver Ryan Davis was knocked out of Saturday’s game after a helmet-to-helmet collision that resulted in a penalty for targeting for Alabama.

The Crimson Tide defender, reserve defensive back Jared Mayden, was ejected. As a result of the penalty, he also will miss the first half of next Saturday’s SEC Championship Game against Georgia.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said Mayden exercised poor judgment on the play.

“A penalty is a penalty,” Saban said. “He led with his head and I cannot comment on how much I tell guys you have to see what you hit. …

If you hit the other guy in the head that’s a problem.”

Mayden, a junior, entered Saturday having appeared in nine of 11 games, with 12 tackles and one sack.

Davis, Auburn’s star receiver and all-time leader in receptions, was attended to by athletic trainers as he lay on the field for some time.

He was able to get up and walk to the locker room under his own power.

“He took a pretty good shot to the head,” Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said. “They expect him to make a full recovery. He was out on the field after we were done.”

No. 1 Alabama led Auburn 31-14 at the time of the injury to Davis, who had caught four passes for 15 yards and also thrown a 23-yard touchdown pass. It ended up winning, 52-21.

Helicopters drying field at Bryant-Denny ahead of

Alabama-Auburn

Alabama took the extraordinary step of using helicopters to dry the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium ahead of the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide’s home game against in-state rival Auburn on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, athletic director Greg Byrne tweeted a photo of the “drying” process, which included two helicopters flying into the stadium and hovering above the grass surface.

The field in Tuscaloosa was in rough shape just a week earlier when Alabama hosted The Citadel, causing several players to lose footing and slip. On Wednesday, coach Nick Saban said there was a plan in place to improve the conditions.

It rained across much of central Alabama on Friday night, soaking the field further.

“I’m sure they’ll do everything they can,” Saban said.

“But I also think that players have to learn how to play on those conditions. I played on a lot worse fields than that.”

Alabama survived that game against The Citadel. After being tied at halftime, the Tide pulled away and won 50-17.

A win over Auburn on Saturday would give Alabama an undefeated regular season. The following weekend, the Tide will face Georgia in the SEC championship game in Atlanta.

Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium — a dome — is plenty familiar to both teams. In January, Alabama played there for the College Football Playoff National Championship, with Alabama winning in overtime on a pass from Tua Tagovailoa to DeVonta Smith.
